First Question for Discussion

In the book United Nations Politics - International Organization in a Divided World (Puchala et al, 2007), the authors contend that the voting power of the G77 at the UN General Assembly does not translate into political power. Do you agree?

  1. I think that the G77 does have considerable power in the GA, especially in the fifth (budget)committee where many deadlines have to be met and decisions have real consequences for the functioning of the UN system. I am less sure that many of the decisions in the second committee, where the G77 plays a very active role, carry the same weight? P.

  2. Thanks to the Group of 77, the Second Committee keeps development high on the global agenda.
